The Masters of Mixology Las Vegas

Masters of Mixology is back, and now in its third year, we’re changing things up a bit. We’ll pit 16 of the best mixologists against each other in five weeks of competition, beginning on Wednesday, March 6thand continuing on every Wednesday for the next six weeks. The victor will take home the title of being the Master of Mixology in Las Vegas.

But we’re doing things a bit differently this year, which will make the competition even more intense. All contestants will receive a sealed-away secret ingredient or tool as their invitation to the competition. Then, during each competition, the winner has the option to remove another competitor’s utensil.

The judging has changed, as well. Legendary mixologists and night life industry leaders will be in charge with deciding who will be crowned the Master of Mixology.

Understanding Mixology

What exactly is mixology, anyway? Here’s a mixology 101 crash course that will help you to better understand the competition. While the terms “bartender” and “mixologist” are sometimes used interchangeably, there’s a significant difference between the two.

Bartenders tend to develop more general skills, and their goal is to serve anyone who comes to the bar for a drink. This may be as basic as pouring a beer, or more complicated in the form of creating a cocktail.

Mixologists,on the other hand, is an extension of bartending, but involves an elevated focus on mixing and crafting cocktails. Mixologists don’t just create drinks; they attend mixology schools to study why certain drinks work, and why particular techniques should be done in certain ways. For example, a mixologist will be well-versed in why certain mixes work well together, proper garnish techniques, and best practices in preparing a cocktail. Mixologists also use this knowledge to invent new and exciting drinks, and these talents help to keep a venue’s menu interesting and evolving.
